To own them by the record date this entails, that,
You must have purchased them before the ex date, and you must hold them until the record date.
You can then sell them after the record date.
The Ex date, is typically 5 days before the rec date.
(Newbies will be unawre of the ex date, and may be under the illusion that they can rock up the day before the rec, and buy, but not true.)
The ex means the shares start trading ex entitlement, ie without the immenent rights.
