    I thought the idea behind the buyback is that it is a tax-effective benefit to shareholders. CSL dividends are unfranked, therefore not so beneficial to Australian shareholders. On the other hand, a boost to the share price (which is what the buyback achieves) is associated with 50% capital gains benefit under the Australian tax system. Happy to be corrected on this if I'm wrong.
