Couldn't agree more Crow. They talk of wanting to die as martyrs but have tried everything they can to avoid death. They had no problem killing 202 innocent people, damaging many more and ruining the lives of countless others. Bring it on and show the world terrorists won't become a protected species. Make them at least pay the same price as their victims. And make their families endure as the victims' families have suffered. Sounds harsh but killers bring it upon themselves and their families just as they do to the victims.

If that makes the world uncivilised then so be it. It's only a label we collectively use to pretend we're better than we are anyway. The fact is we are all human and should be treated equal, so if someone decides to wilfully take another's life then they should expect the same back. Nothing 'uncivilised' about expecting equality imo. It's a much fairer system than what we have now.

If we want to pretend we are civilised then we should kill murderers in a civilised manner. Time to send a message to those who would do evil deeds that we wish to live in peace not fear, therefore hard decisions won't be shirked by hiding behind words such as civilised.

If Australia was attacked say in a Bali bombing type scenario, what should we as a nation do?

Would it change anything if we had proof it was sanctioned by the attackers' country?

Is it ok to kill innocent people of that country who were not involved in the attack?

If the attack was a one off should we seek any sought of retribution or justice?

    If so how?

If we choose to do nothing and are attacked for a second time does that change anything?

What if the attacks kept happening?

If we choose to drop bombs indiscriminately and kill many thousands of innocent people who are simply going about their business and have no influence over the leaders' decisions, does that make our actions as a nation right or wrong?

Why does it make it right or wrong?

If we call it self defence to drop bombs on innocent people then why should killing someone who is actually responsible for the deaths of others be wrong?

If we capture those who were killing our citizens do we execute them or lock them up in a prison that feeds them and gives them a bed and allows them to associate freely with the rest of their mates where they can gloat about their deeds?

    What is an adequate punishment?

Is locking someone up for the rest of their life adequate?

    Or solitary confinement?

    Maybe hard labour?

What is fair punishment for the brutal killing of another?

Is it worth the life of the killer?

    If not, why?

Some people seem to think we are tainted by an experience and therefore become unable to rationalise fairly. What they don't realise is we have gained a greater level of understanding as we have been on both sides. It's no different to those who live through hard times such as recessions or depressions as well as boom times are probably better equiped to make sense of a bust than those who have only known good times. They may not be any more successful in preventing the impact but simply understand the nature of things.

My family and I have experienced the pain and tragedy of living with the actions of a cold blooded killer. We don't live a bitter and twisted life because of what has happened. We are positive people who enjoy life and revel in its beauty and respect its impermenancy. Having strong views regarding capital punishment is but a very small part and regardless whether it is ever brought back or not won't change our lives a great deal. I simply express my views openly and am just as happy to receive counter claims or agreement. Its healthy to debate and offer opinions as it allows the possibility to see things from a different perspective.

Personally I will be glad to see the end of the Bali bombers and the constant media attention they garner. Kill them and end their hate-filled sentiment. They deserve their fate and the sooner the better.
