People should look into the work required just to make a calibration curve for flame atomic absorption spectroscopy of a (contaminated) water sample. Let alone changing the lamp over for a different target analyte. You can't change them if they're too hot. What if one breaks? They're not cheap either.

ICP atomic emission spectroscopy for soil - say rock chips that may have gold can take hours, two acidification reactions, microwave digestion, dilution and then running the samples.

If you make a mistake with the calibration curve here, particularly if you use an internal standard, you have many hours of work that must be done again.
