Ofcourse, we are looking for an elephant here and I know one cannot say "he found an elephant unless he sees with bare eyes". However, sometimes you can hear the trumpet of an elephant even outside the forest, which gives you an idea about his presence. They leave behind their big footprints which gives an idea about direction, and the distance.

Similarly, I agree that the auger result has a limitation in assessing the depth.
However, with regards to CAD we only need glimps, a sign of confirmation because:

Firstly, CAD's auger result will be comparable with DEG's augur result. Which will be a big hint.
Secondly, the auger result will allow CAD to map next potential targets, joining the dots from potential target to DEG's assessment will provide big insight. Say, any encouraging drilling result close to DEG's boundry will provide huge confidence. And furthermore, mimicing the same across many holes will prove a point that the elephant is present.
