OCP Group?s Stand Concerning the Draft Proposal For The EU Regulation on Cadmium in Fertilizers

1.2. The phosphoric acid decadmiation technology has only been developed at laboratory level, and the actual impact of its cost would be significantly higher than that mentioned in the risk assessment.
- The precipitate eliminated is very rich in cadmium (10 to 20 times richer than the initial phosphoric acid) and has to be treated before its disposal. The cost of this operation is not included in the estimate mentioned,
- The phosphoric acid currently used in fertilizers is in fact composed of non-concentrated phosphoric acid, solids contained in the acid and concentrated acid. As decadmiation can only take place during the process of phosphoric acid concentration, the acid used at present with no concentration must also undergo the process. This implies a supplementary cost of approximately 20$/t P2O5.
