Evacuated residents whose homes were at risk of being consumed by a three-storey wall of water after erosion damaged a large dam in the US have been told to return to their houses.
An evacuation order for the area surrounding the Oroville Dam, north of San Francisco, was downgraded to a warning at around 2pm on Tuesday after 188,000 were force to flee amid fears a heavily eroded drainage channel was at risk of overflowing.
Residents and business owners have been told they can return to their homes and resume operations, but have been warned to stay alert and be prepared to leave again in case the threat of overflow returns.

Authorities said they took an "aggressive and proactive" approach to address the erosion concerns after weeks of heavy rain filled the rarely used structure to capacity and put undue stress on its emergency spillway.

Construction crews are also reinforcing the fractured spillway with concrete in preparation for oncoming storms.
