We need to remember that bees need to be carefully prepared for almond pollination. Hives need to be built up in locations with good nectar flows and shipped in. Tens of thousands of hives trucked in on semi trailers. Once on the almonds hives accumulate a lot of pollen but no nectar. So bee keepers need to provide extra feed points for the bees. Bad weather in the source locations where the bees are coming from could have an impact on pollination and cost. I recall SHV at one point considering having a capacity for inhouse beekeeping/pollination as a measure to smooth the cost spike. Cold weather off the Rockies or coast could limit bee activity as they wont fly as far.
