Since 1879, the Crane Paper Company of Massachusetts, has had the exclusive government contract to manufacture the paper used in the currency of the United States. Crane and Company patented banknote paper with embedded silk threads in 1844 and has supplied paper to the United States Treasury since 1879. There are no wood fibers or starch in currency paper. Instead, like high quality stationery, currency paper is composed of a special blend of cotton and linen fibers. Its embedded with other colour security fibers.
The blank sheets are then delivered to The Bureau of Engraving and Printing, who actually print up the stuff.
