They won't reduce the bit size unless they run casing or a hole-opener with the smaller bit. The other bit was probably a tricone bit and either had it's hours up or was torquing up (bearings worn). When the formation changes from either shales or clays etc a different type of bit is sometimes needed. As with tricone bits slow down and gawl-up when drilling clays. A P.D.C. bit will slice through it like butter and start to sometimes allow them to drill up a storm. All good still and just everyday drilling!
