I have always wondered why employers and employees cannot be left to cut their own deals. I thought our ancestors fought wars to give us the freedom that the current states now thinks we should not have.

When I was a student, and struggling to feed myself, sixty years ago, I would have been happy to get the equivalent of a roasted supermarket chicken for an hour's work. I did some work at the university library, and I was paid about $5 an hour in today's equivalent. I was not happy with that wage, so I quit - just as all workers in Australia are free to do.

Currently, I probably work about fifteen hours a week for my adult children, and I do not get paid at all. Should they be arrested?
