EV's y-o-y growth rates are +60% for past 3 years, those number would have been higher if there wasn't a shortage of batteries, particularly throughout 2018, where a number of EV makers had to delay deliveries due demand.
ESS y-o-y growth rates are +100% over the past 18 months, albeit, rising from a much lower base when compared to EV's.
Overall cost of EV when compared to ICE is lower over 5 years. Comparing US$55k Tesla M3 and BMW 340ix, the overall purchase, fuel and maintenance cost over 5 years is $64,500 & $82,700 respectively. Those numbers include fuel costs, therefore if your charged your EV from home solar/battey set up, fuel cost are $0, saving you a further $2,550. Thus, savings over the 5 year period = $20,750 ($4,150 pa). Those savings would more than pay for your home solar/battery set up, not to mention the subsequent 5 years. If you include the EV subsidy in those numbers, the saving increases by a further $11,000 or $2,200 pa.
The cost of an electric engine is approx $800. The cost a reconditioned Toyota Hilux Diesel engine is currently $3,950. A replacement battery for your EV after trade-in (recycle) value might very well be on par with the reconditioned ICE after 10 years of driving.
