The nub of this US China lark is:
-Up to 2014 , The CIA, US Armed Forces and US Government thought that private enterprise in China would trump State owned enterprises and
that the rapidly energing Chinese Middle Class would, over time, debunk the CCP. and that China would be then broken up into separate States
and Uncle Sam is your Uncle. China threat neutralised.
-Then along comes XI with 2 plans; the OBI & Made in China 2025. Not alone that, he also shoe horned himself into the job for life.
These two massive plans add to China's already global dominance in Trade and Manufacturing; historically the stuff of empire builders,
-US China Hawks then had an sobering epiphany: Plan (a) u/s and revert to plan (b) along the seemingly successful USSR demolition strategies:
-economicall ringwall the enemy
-bolster up an agressive armed forces cordon around the enemy
-support USSR enemies
-engineer and support internal dissent
In summary ringwall & starve the bastards out like a global version of a medieval siege.
In such conflict it may be useful to change places so that one can have some idea of where the other guy is at
(like a Scomo Christian might say "walk around in his shoes")
Now let's suppose:
-That China is the hedgemon
-that China has ringwalled the USA with bases, rocket launch sites and observation satellites with flotillas of warships off the coasts; east & west.
-that the Chinese spy forces , the Chinese Armed Forces & the Chinese Government are hell bent on demolishing the US Capitalist System
-that China is supporting Black & Hispanic civil rights movements in the USA & nudging neighbours towards an agressive anti-USA stance
-that Brazil is throwing Chinese shitballs at the USA
-that China is bombarding global media with anti-USA propaganda.
Now suppose that we are Brazil.
If you were a good WASP Middle American how would you feel?
What's more, if you were the "Average Brazilian" with that kind of combuction how would be and where would be if China lost?
If you were the US Middle American would you be advocating buying any commodity from Brazil that you could source elsewhere.?
Please note: I'm not promoting one side or the other, just reversing roles & substituting Brazil for Aus
In philosophy a good measure of fairness and equity is the reflexive test ....reversing roles etc.
So to get back to the header question: Can Australia stand another swipe from China?
Sure we can but we'll have to all work twice as hard for lower incomes for a decade. In this case Ideology costs money.
If we had played our cards right we'd have been more diplomatic, used China's trade to accrue enough lollies to industrialise and become economically independant from China and have enough lollies left over to
build a proper Defence Force ; not a foreign expeditionary force to fight others' wars.
As it is now we'll have to defer our planned $300 Billion spend on armaments making us even more vulnerable.
