Wood shavings, sawdust, chips etc will lower the ph of the soil. Adding lime will raise the ph (which incidently, most vege's love a slightly alkaline soil).
I used to live next door to a wonderful Italian family, with the best vege garden!. He told me to "adda thu lime" :)
