Because gold futures tanked from $2002 to $1992 in the last 30 minutes of trading (a drop of another 0.5%). I think the bots in the market just have an algorithm to sell when gold futures go down.
Now it's back towards $2k USD again. The markets will wake up in due time if gold consolidates around the $2k level and if it ends up pushing higher.
