ching exploring in the ring- wpl Woodside may double oil output by 2009

Woodside Petroleum Ltd says it could double its annual production to 120 million barrels of oil equivalent by 2009.

One of Australia's largest oil and gas companies, Woodside has forecast 56 million barrels of oil equivalent for this year, mostly from the North West Shelf joint venture.

This will increase next year to over 70 million barrels when the Enfield, Otway and Chinguetti projects come online.

Chinquetti is the most advanced with first production expected next March.

Following Chinguetti, Otway will start production towards the middle of next year.

Enfield is on track to move into production at the end of next year, with the $1.48 billion development now over 60 per cent complete.

Woodside will drill 23 exploration wells this year at a cost of $275 million and a significant increase on last year's 14 wells.
