every buy and sell placed by us is registered through our broker to the main trading platform that all systems speak to.

a stop loss, to us, is simply a sell order in the system.

Our broker must place the 'sell order'. our broker does not manually place the sell order (stop loss) when the SP is hit. the sell order (stop loss) is placed into the market the moment we place it. This sell order (stop loss) is live.

This basically tells them what price we are prepared to sell at. If enough 'stop losses' (sell orders) are placed at a certain price level, they see that we are prepared to sell 'X' many shares at 'Y' price and they calculate how many shares they must short sell to get to that price level and may intact take a loss on some to get to that level, if the calculation provides scope for profit. Actually, this calc is done through an algorithmic which then advises the broker that this opportunity exists and the broker comes in to take action, based on the information provided.

An old friend of mine was a trader for a major institution and the trading platform they use is real time and sees much more than we do via the usual commsec, etrade, etc.

Very easy way to think about it, Stop loss = Sell order.

Leverage - now thats another thing to think about!
