They are in a position now where they have to see this thing through. How do you eradicate people willing to blow themselves up for their cause???? They are facing irregular militia forces not armies.

IMVHO this war will stretch for months and months if not years. The regime will go but the hatred for the US, as with Israel, will remain. Any future regime in Iraq together with any occupying force will be constantly targeted by extremists. No gunship or tank will stop that.

Also, tell me what is stopping an extremist from hopping onto a plane, heading over to the US and blowing himself up in a crowded shopping mall in some major US city???
