    "intervention from the elite left"

    Hi Davo,
Above is a potted history of the subject up until 2012 , not sure that your "Elite Left" comment holds water, especially if you add on the last 9 years.

So , how would this "Elite Leftist " go after the problem?
    1. public housing
    2. reduce some of the concessional taxes on capital gains , including the tax free status of the family home
    3. reduce the bias in the social security system for home ownership
    4. land taxes rather than council rates and stamp duty
    5. better investment in public transport to areas where there is land.

Note: 2 to 4 are not a tax grab . Without increasing taxes overall, they would free up mobility of property in the market and increase the ''effective'' supply .
My 5 bedder, with me , my spouse and an aging cat and dog , not far from the city , near a train station , lots of parks , might just become available.
And no, that is not an advert.

    cheers
