Animals, especially cats and dogs can sense an earthquake many seconds before humans can. I understand younger people can hear down to about 20 Hz but as we grow older we loose low (and mainly high) frequency hearing although one would imagine that even if low frequency sound was outside our hearing range if it was loud enough we would be able to feel it instead
