This more research funding is needed line is present in most scientific articles. Its often used to accuse scientists of self interest however this isn't necessarily the whole story.
In a journal article, the scientist is implored to add a section on 'future direction' for further study. Very rarely will you see research that ends with 'and that's all the knowledge humanity will ever need on the topic'. Its hammered in during your studies, and in fairness it adds to the completeness of an article. Science is a long term, collaborative and incremental effort.
Also, most scientists have bugger all job security, with their employment tied to funding. Once a project is over and the funding for the project is over, the scientist faces uncertainty. Even if they did an excellent job and performed at a world class standard, they face potential unemployment. Publish or perish is a shitty system and makes science worse for all involved. In short, more research is always needed, and there's never enough funding to go around. It drives our best and brightest out of the lab.
