    thanks for the dialogue shonky_aussie:
    you said:
"I guess, from your comments, I would question the following assertions:
    1. That success for PayPass = success for Multos.
    2. That every sale of PayPass = $$s for Multos
    3. That Keycorp are the brains behind anything"

I don't have the answers but here are some quick quotes etc to indicate the leads info behind my 'false hopes'!

Firstly how closely PayPass is linked to the Multos O/S.

    From the Multos site:
    http://www.multos.com/downloads/marketing/Whitepaper_EMV_Migration_Economics_Platform_Comparison.pdf.
Part of this recent paper makes it clear that PayPass is actually only one nest of applications based on the Multos platform:

EMV applications available for all MULTOS devices:
    MasterCard M/Chip 4 Lite &
    Select in all configurations including:
    o Chip Authentication
    (CAP)
    o Pre-Authorised Debit
    o Paypass
    MasterCard M/Chip 2 Lite &
    Select
    •Visa VSDC 1.4 SDA & DDA
    •Amex EMV SDA & DDA
    •JCB JSMART SDA & DDA
    •Common Payment Application
    due for release 4 2006.
    Additional payment applications:
Bo’, FISC, Moneo, K-Cash, SEED, T- MONEY

This was actually new to me and is simply a given in any reporting on the PayPass rollout. I also note that Mifare applications; used in transit and in security cards are also based on Multos.
Mastercard has a long development history with Multos.
    From a 2002 article:
"also Going forward, MasterCard, which sees Multos as the most secure card platform, will work to integrate Multos with JavaCard, to enable member banks to choose their preferred technology."
They have about a 40%ownership of the Multos holding company StepNexus according to blurbs on that site.

    The second point:
    another document.
    http://www.multos.com/downloads/marketing/06-11-24%20MULTOS%20Implementations.pdf.
This flyer explains what you need to do in order to
implement either MULTOS or MULTOS step/one yourself
rather than use an existing implementation.
    1. Obtain a Licence
A MULTOS license allows the licensee to implement and
deploy both MULTOS and MULTOS step/one. The initial
fee for the licence is $50,000 with a recurring annual fee
of $35,000. Additionally, there is a per-device royalty fee
of $0.03 for the first 15 million MULTOS devices shipped.
All additional MULTOS devices are royalty free. There are
no per-device royalties payable for MULTOS step/one
devices however, there is a per-device fee payable to
StepNexus Services, the provider of key management
    services.
Please contact StepNexus for further information.

    The third Point:
rather than go into all the firsts for Keycorp and there have been quite a few... I remember reading the comments made by the Banka Koper people re the role Keycorp played in the first Visa contactless roll-out on the Multos platform.
That plus the work with turkish ID, Citibank/Bannamex and in particular too the Taiwan MoneyCard which looks like being the be all and end all of transit applications and is referred to on the Multos site as such.

Thanks for the points raised cause it has made me research a bit deeper and find out some other encouraging signs though that won't be the end of it and obviously Keycorp still needs to get its act together in some areas.
