The Australian Government is prioritising the development of the nation’s position as a global supplier of rare earths and high performance metals. Financial support will be offered for critical minerals projects that the government deems eligible. The funding will be available through Export Finance Australia (EFA), including the Defence Export Facility. The government will also give access to dual funding, through the EFA as well as the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF).(starting Jan 1)

Matt Canavan explains there is an opportunity for a . nickel- cobalt industry to develop in North Queensland near Greenvale. "That would..re-emerge thousands of jobs back to Greenvale..it's now this renaissance of cobalt that is returning the potential for jobs and investment in North Queensland," Mr Canavan says. "It would also potentially help open up opportunities for a nickel refinery in Townsville"

The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) on Tuesday said that the five-year funding package would attract more overseas investment, drive more international trade and create more local jobs.“Queensland has globally-significant reserves of copper, nickel, zinc, graphite and molybdenum and major deposits of cobalt, rhenium, scandium, tantalum, niobium, lithium, rare earths and vanadium,” QRC CEO Ian Macfarlane said.“Queensland will be at the forefront of the development of critical minerals for Australia and the world, whether for defence industries, manufacturing, trade and regional development.
