its because of the reason posted by elitehacker.
capital losses can only be used to offset capital gains not income.
If you are a trader it doesnt matter as the stock at june 30 method is used.
If you are an investor you could sell if your in profit on july 1 and pay tax in may 2011 assuming its a one off ( your not on payg installments etc ). If you sell on june 30 you pay in may 2010.
