canonisation

I notice that on 13 August the following was lodged:

RECEIPT OF REQUEST FOR COSTING OF ELECTION COMMITMENT
The Department of Finance and Deregulation has been asked by the Prime Minister to cost the following election commitment under the Charter of Budget Honesty Act 1998:
Celebrating the canonisation of Mary MacKillop.

    Two questions:
    1. How much?
    2. Why?

As we all know, there is no such thing as miracles, so why is the australian taxpayer being asked to help fund something that in effect is an internal club function?

we are a secular society and the constitution specifically disallows financing religion so how do the catholics expect to get away with this one?
