In early 2007, ERG was selected to deliver an Automatic Fare Collection system for the public transport system in Capetown, South-Africa. The contract was awarded by the Provincial Government of Western Cape, Department of Transport and Public Works, which is responsible for public transport in the province of Western Cape.
This pilot project is the first phase of the “the Transformation of the Subsidized Scheduled Public Transport Services in the Western Cape” project. The first phase focuses on the city of Capetown. The scope of the project covers the restructuring of transport lines and transport network, implementing a new fare system and introducing a new AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) and an IFM (Integrated Fare Management) systems.
The scope of the project covers the delivery of a Back-Office system to support the operation of 2000 buses and to service 200,000 passenger trips in the Capetown region. This system is to process 2.5 million transactions per day. ERG will deliver a Check-In/Check-Out system, which is seamless and easy to use for the users: the system automatically calculates the fare, provides discounts for connections, etc, without the passenger or drivers having to worry about it.
The IFM system will be integrated with DigiCore’s C-Track system, an Automatic Vehicle Location system. Within the vehicles, this integration will assure that drivers only have to log on once in order to have access to the features of both systems. On the Back-Office system, data coming from the 2 systems will be consolidated in order to provide management reporting and trend analysis.
This project kicked-off in March 2007 and the installation of the integrated systems is foreseen for the second half of 2007. The project is scheduled to be finalised by February 2008.
This pilot project will allow the government to roll out the IFM equipment on 2000 buses in the later stage. The first phase of the project is to enable government to add inspector handhelds, passenger card acceptance units and/or platform card processors to the system, if required. After the full rollout of the project in Capetown, the province might reconsider to upgrade the system on the Western Cape Province.
