I have been reading this post this afternoon for entertainment and education.
I recently had need to visit a tax agent re share trading. after some discussion and comment on my poor records he asked for my trading a/c number and tax file number which was then transmitted to the ATO. They had record of every transaction I had ever made and the figures were there simply for the agent / me to approve or not. In my case the agent said all was in order. So IMHO for Oz tax payers go visit your agent in the first instance.
