South-west Greens' MP Paul Llewellyn has opposed further bauxite mining in the region.

Mr Llewellyn lashed out at comments made by Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan, who welcomed an exploration proposal by Bauxite Resources Limited.

Ms MacTiernan says if approved, the mine could help put the disused rail line from Manjimup to Greenbushes back into action.

However, Mr Llewellyn says mining would devastate forestry in the region.

"It's extraordinary that we have a Minister saying that we will entertain open cut mining in the region across the south-west region, which is a lifestyles area, in order to justify opening up a railway line which should be open up in the first place," he said.

Ms MacTiernan says the proposal will have to get full environmental approvals before going ahead.
