The BHP knock back may be a forerunner of countries protecting their resources and revenue. It seems a logical move as resources become scarce. Economies of scale for big miners will become irrelevant when put in with sovereign protection. If this becomes the norm will BHP have to return capital or bump up dividends to get rid of the excess cash. This may be the end of multinational expansion except in more sustainable industries....car manufacture which may provide long term work. As the resources are not likely to go walkabout, it is good policy to hold onto.
