I can't say who am bidding for in stocks. The offer is very thin on the one I really want, and one of my colleagues has threatened to kill me if I say anything.

Interesting comment in you last paragraph about tracking market mood. I have a young quant working for me who tracks the correlation between equity market shifts and the Google hits on certain economic commentators. It produces surprisingly good predictions.
