Not alone is insurance higher on an EV, the initial purchase price is 3 times that of a conventional equivalent For example one of the cheapest EVs, the Chinese built MG has a price tag of $45K while its ICE equivalent is sub $20K
We import all our cars (over a million a year) whether they be eve, ICE or Hybrids and should we go EV exclusive by 2035 as mooted, then we could see our import bill rise by over $30 billion/year ; more that the savings on less oil imports!
Purely from an economic point of view, we would be better doing a 50 year transition to Evs by using our own CNG as an interim measure. We have oodles of LNG on & offshore.
