Personally I don't think the 10/12c higher per litre is worth it unless the car specifically states high octane fuel as standard. You would've got the increased distance from the fact you were on a highway cycle. Try the same experiment in the city and you will see negligible return for you extra spending.
The best thing you can do for fuel efficiency is to keep your car well serviced and don't forget to check your tyre pressures weekly. It's good practice as you may inherit a puncture and the sooner you realise the better.
