T cells: recognise specific antigens presented by other cells and initiate a targeted immune response (adaptive immune system)
NK cells: cells recognise and kill virus-infected cells and tumor cells without prior sensitisation (innate immune system)
NKT cells: cells recognise lipid antigens presented by the CD1d molecule (Bridge between innate and adaptive immunity). Note, less than 0.1% of peripheral blood mononuclear cells are iNKT cells and NKT cells play a critical role in tailoring immune responses contributing to overall immune system homeostasis.
Invariant: iNKT cells have a TCR (T-cell receptor) common to all humans. This makes the iNKT cells from other people look the same to our immune systems, creating allogeneic (donor-supplied) opportunities.
Induced: as in iPSC cells refers to the process of reprogramming adult cells, like skin cells, to revert them to cells similar to embryonic stem cells
