ALAN CRANSBERG: In a smelter you need power 24/7. It's got to be reliable. It's got to be consistent. There is not the amount of renewables within the system at the moment that is either economic or available 24/7 that would power a smelter.
KELLIE LAZZARO: Loy Yang's chief executive Ian Nethercote says if more carbon friendly technologies are discovered down the track, both companies have committed to investigating their use.
