According to BZE executive director Matthew Wright, the commissioned report showed that the full life-cycle emissions of CSG were up to 45 per cent greater than the carbon emitted by a modern coal-fired power plant.

Mr Heard said he viewed BZE's allegation with concern.

"Investors should take care when adopting industry claims that gas (especially unconventional sources which utilise fracking) is of global climate benefit due to substitution of more greenhouse gas intensive energy sources on a full life-cycle basis," Mr Heard said.

"This may directly impact future earnings in terms of carbon liability under a possibly more thorough future inventory of emissions.

"It also calls into question public and political support for the industry, already under substantial pressure in the CSG sector."
