At a guess I'd say it's to do with the fact that a great many, such as those on this forum apparently, whom don't understand the value of long term framework.
It's not indifferent to those who are calling for all boat people to be turned around or sent home etc, etc. In the future people will be wondering what we were thinking, they'll be paying for people to come to Australia in years to come! That is provided the ecosystem hasn't already given up the ghost on us.
It isn't as simple as many here like to think it is, it's a very complicated issue whereby the ecosystem and the economy are so interrelated.
Just think long term and or big picture, you'll get over it.
