Yes the dream is eventually chemo will eventually go the way of the dodo, but that is unfortunately a long way off. The NIH ran a recent study in around 8000 cancer patients where they used every molecular tool and diagnostic tests they had to try and match everyone up to a non-chemo treatment. They found they were only able to find a match for less than 20% of the patients. The other 80% of patients had to be treated with traditional chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Until we have new treatment options for everyone we are going to have to rely on chemo as the backbone of cancer therapy - we need to make chemo safer and more effective.

People might be surprised to know that the absolute amount of chemo used continue to grow every year even with all the new treatments being released. While in slow relatively decline as a percentage of all cancer treatments, as the population ages there are many more cancer cases every year - basically cancer diagnosis is growing faster than new treatments that can displace chemo from the anticancer landscape.
