Tell your friend to join the army for a year. He can learn about the real world- get smashed with his new buddies, have a fight or two, waste all his money, spear some gash, pehaps even get locked in the clink for insolence.
Then he can have a think about where hes headed. Probably to WA to drive trucks on a mining site till he get some cash together to continue the one big party which is life.
