Anglo Australians are extreme in their assertion that migrants are welcome, but only if they profess to be like Australians. What a pathetic aspiration, especially from peoples whose cultures date back millenia while Australia's dates back years. We literally had no identifiable culture until the 60s - just a semblance of a way of original thought.

What about Canada? Could you live there with separate French and English societies? What about the US, with whole neighbourhoods where hispanics have no need of English. What about Malaysia, where Chinese Indians and Malays all live separate cultural lifes which overlap comfortably.

You pen people up and tell them you gotta be like us and you're not welcome otherwise and you create resentment and invite ridicule.

You my boy are a dried out old memory of an empty society where beer and sweat were at the basis of attitudes, but never culture, never national identity.

Not until we adopted aspects of all the peoples we took in did we get a national identity, which is as deep and wide as all the migrant societies we are made up of.
