That’s because you have rubbed shoulders with a variety of ethnic groups.
Walking past an Indian, Chinese, Muslim, Buddhist , Noogar, Cooree, Brazilian or whatever at the local shopping centre hardly gives an urban dweller a better understanding of those different groups.
I live in the big smoke too but like you I’ve travelled internationally outside of the packaged holiday experience and lived in remote communities as well.
I am by no means an expert on indigenous affairs but I got to know enough friends in a community just outside of Darwin to have a group of 6 indigenous types call out to me as I was walking to Cullin Bay with a carton of beer by my first name and they even offered to carry my box for me.
There’s nothing wrong with urbanite’s not having much contact with people outside of their group, that’s just how it is for most people.
