Article on Bloomberg states that Alan Carpenter to review Uranium mining. A litlle change of heart since Saturday. Go Redport go!

Western Australia's Alan Carpenter Replaces Gallop as Premier
Jan. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Alan Carpenter, who says he may review his party's ban on uranium mining, has been elected premier of mineral-rich Western Australia state.

Lawmakers from the ruling Labor Party in Perth elected Carpenter, 49, unopposed to replace Geoff Gallop, who resigned last week to seek treatment for depression. Carpenter, who will be sworn in tomorrow, said he will remain minister for state development.

Western Australia, which is the country's largest state in area and nearly four times the size of Texas, accounts for a third of the country's merchandise exports. It generated A$38.8 billion ($29 billion) in the year ended June 30, 2005.

The state, which is home to Woodside Petroleum Ltd. and Hardman Resources Ltd., has 58 producing oil fields and 1,055 operating mines, according to government figures.

Carpenter worked as a television reporter with Australian Broadcasting Corp. before being elected to parliament in 1996.

He said he may be prepared to review his party's ban on uranium mining.

``I will be prepared to watch how the world situation unfolds in relation to demand for energy, in relation to the scientific capacity to deal with the waste products,'' Carpenter told reporters in Perth. ``If there comes a time when I think it's right to review our position, to change our position, then I'll look at it even more closely.''

Australia has 41 percent of global uranium reserves though it meets only 21 percent of demand, according to government figures, partly due to mining bans.
