the first blow must be the numbers argument
ie there are 45 million refugees and 20,000 places for refugees
how do you choose?
we could do it our way or their way
ie we want them to come from camps. People who come by boat want them to do it their way.
For some Australians it doesn't matter whether they come by boat or from the camps
Well Senator Bob Carr says that it does matter how people come.
He warned today that if we allow people to gain access by boat we are in danger of our whole immigration program being filled with people who pay smugglers.

Senator Carr told Sky News's Australian Agenda program the unchecked arrival of boatpeople posed a threat to the integrity of Australia's migration program.
"If Australia were to say you can sign up with a people-smuggler, put your money down, you can come into Australian territorial waters and you'll be processed in Australia, we would very soon have all our migrant intake occupied by the people brought here by people-smugglers - 180,000 people a year," he said.
A refusal to address the problem of boat arrivals could result in Australia having "no other source of migrants in this country", Senator Carr said.

So it does seem to matter how they come here
