There was a thread on early christians carrying swords, I couldnt reply to it.
Almost certainly there would have been lawlessness in those times. It would be practical to carry weapons to discourage violence especially when traveling. A short sword would also have a lot of practical applications besides as weapons in day to day life in those times. Hey, it could have been a fashion accessory.
