We could probably do that without building nuclear power stations and taking on any risk of a home-grown Chernobyl (which can't be ruled out completely). As we have some of the oldest and most stable continental crust in the World, I'm surprised no-one has suggested building the reactors in underground caverns with the turbines, cooling towers etc connected above. If Australians are good at anything, it is digging holes in the ground.
