Victoria is leading a push for the commonwealth to underwrite the importation of LNG into Australia, with the issue to be discussed at a meeting of the Energy and Climate Change Ministerial Council on Friday. However, the proposal has met with strong opposition gas pipeline company APA, which is worried the importation of LNG will lead to an increase in the price of local gas. APA has flagged plans to spend $2 billion on piping gas from new sources at a cheaper cost than LNG terminals, while energy experts are worried the underwriting plan is yet another attempt by governments to intervene in gas markets.
