I’ve made some calls, to someone who made some calls, who made some calls, who made some call, who called me back and allegedly there are multiple reasons. 1. A legitimate concern for scamming 2. Government is putting the screws into the big 4 through the back door via ‘policy’ because they are practically broke and need the GST on all revenue.
Side note they said the intention was to ban cash entirely within 10-20 years and if that fails they will bring in a GST equivalent fee on cash withdrawal transactions. So if you go to the bank to withdraw 10k you get 9k in cash etc.
