I think that the reason they are spending so much time on the C layer is because it is not cleaning up as they would have liked.
The larger diameter pipe (which was mentioned in the Norwesterly5) is allowing the gas to pass through the water/sand column with out ejecting the volumes that they need to get the well to clean up thoroughly.
That maybe why they are letting the pressure build up and then releasing, to blow the crap out.
Remember we are 3 kilometres below the surface, that's a lot of back pressure impeding the gas from flowing.
As the C layer is one of the primary targets of this well they are bound to spend more time to fix this problem.
It was also mentioned in the Norwesterly that they are considering the installation of a 50mm pipe to enable better cleanup. What effect that will have on future gas flows, if any, I have no idea at this stage.
