It is so obvious that the mum planned to get rid of the kid by allowing it to ride out onto the street and getting wiped out by a car. The dog (the hero) actually saved the kid and the cat was the mums accomplice and never liked the affection the kid took from it in the first place. Any normal cat would have been curled up on a window sill not giving a toss.
