Yes, pet ownership comes with a negative loss side and often more keenly felt than the loss of humans. I've lost many pets, but the worst was my last dog although she was of a good age we were very close and she had a terrible death. The other that seemed so unfair was a terrific young horse killed by a fallen electricity line many years ago. The only other horse in the paddock was a 'pensioner' and of course he was untouched. I was extremely lucky not to have been electrocuted when I found him as I missed seeing the line. Fortunately I didn't touch him as his eye had a 'funny look' - weird, but this was what stopped me from touching him. My mother disbelieved my story and sent my older sister to investigate - lucky she saw the line. Couldn't sue for compensation as the line was a private one.
The original breeder heard what had happened and sent a much better conformed filly to us. She was a good looker and later did well in competitions with her, but I could never just climb on her back and ride without bridle or saddle as the lost one. He was something very special and never forgotten.
Geez, I could go on and on, but will just tell you one more. Another horse of mine we got from a passing drover, again quite young, whom my parents lent to another person in the district was returned in terrible nick and died the first night home! Another special horse lost. Guess my parents thought he needed more work. Do remember having a fall from him with his foot ending up on my stomach, but no real damage...guess that might have had something to do with why he was lent to an adult to work, but it was just an everyday kind of fall and not the horse's fault at all. Life can be so unfair to so many animals. May they all RIP
