All good points and true Kingpins. Article in the Australian on the weekend (last) noted that the politics of Merkel's decision is already under fire in Germany for being impractical. Further, seems France actually imports power from Germany during the summertime and may need to increase its own nuclear capacity to make up the shortfall.
Apparently the French have voiced concerns to Germany and indicated that Germany should not make the decision on its own, i.e. it should consider the decision as part of the EU community and factor in the consequences that will befall all its members, not just Germany.

Interesting how this will pan out but I think there are too many hurdles to jump to actually implement the decision. The article also mentions that Merkel made the decision to ensure she doesn't lose the election in two years' time. Once the election is over, the ground will likely shift back to nuclear.
